The thing that intrigues me about this book is how really cliched it is for a protagonist that's so conscious of it. Poppy, a girl suffering from anxiety is constantly going on about how cliched her life is. Normal town, fairly popular. Incredibly boring character set up, if I'm honest. It is sadly true that Poppy Lawson is a very dull, highly un-enigmatic girl who has almost no quirks about her apart from her spectacular ability to complain. Apart from her anxiety, of course, which she decides to define herself by.
But of course, this all changes when she meets out-of-this-worldly beautiful Noah, a guitar player in a band and they inevitably fall in love.
Yes, a rather attractive, talented guitar player picks her out of a crowd of 100 screaming girls. Of course.
Noah, I'm afraid to say, is also rather boring, being that typical cliche of cocky, highly self-assured boy is rather dull too. I really don't know how an author who brought so much emphasis to cliches and how boring they were can LET HER CHARACTERS BE SO VOID OF ANY PERSONALITY WHATSOEVER.
HOWEVER. After I have just completely laid into this book, I have to say, the concept of it is pretty good. Actually, very good. Completely new and a really interesting take on Soulmates. So I liked that. I also enjoyed the ending, which was a complete shock and MASSIVE PLOT TWIST that ended really naturally (if really sad *stifles a cry*)
So, to sum up, the concept of Soulmates is great. The characters need work. What's interesting is that the protagonist in Holly Bourne's other book, The Manifesto on How to be Interesting has a lot of depth and quirk. And the Manifesto was written first...hmmm...
6.5/10. Recommended for anyone in the mood for a romance with a twist of action (and a low intolerance for the cliche)
Hope you enjoyed that one. I was WAY meaner than I expected I'd be haha.
