I'm not really sure why it's taken so long to finally write this, but here it is...
First things first: I'm jealous of Laini Taylor's smilies and metaphors. Seriously, her writing is incredible. See, you get a lot of different books; books that have awful writing but an amazing plot line so does well (Twilight, The Mortal Instruments), books that have brilliant writing, but a bit of a boring storyline (The Bone Season, Fangirl. I actually loved these books, but not a lot happened) And then we get books like these that have incredible writing and an incredible plot line.
Everything in this book was so intricately thought out; every word counted and every word was perfect. The world that Laini Taylor created was mysterious and beautiful with the backstory behind it all really carefully crafted. I wish I had the amazing imagination that Taylor has (because WOW WHERE DID THIS COME FROM??)
Basically, the story follows Karou, an art student in the beautiful city of Prague (which was the perfect setting for this story). On the outside, she is normal with a slightly darkened past, but on the inside she's a servant to a strange and mysterious creature, his work mysterious even to Karou. But after the unthinkable happens, she's left alone. Alone to discover her twisted past, what world she really lives in, and most importantly, who she really is.
To add to that, there's angels, half human half animals and a huge, brutal war.
And an incredibly sexy angel named Akiva.
With a bit of forbidden love thrown in there.
Despite all of this, (and the most gorgeous cover EVER) the writing is so detailed and intricate that it took me ages to read. Long enough that I very nearly gave up when I hit a particularly uneventful bit. But that's probably just me and my impatience...
Are you a fan of the Mortal Instruments? Are you mourning the end of the series? Then READ AND ENJOY!
