Cadence is a member of the perfect Sinclair family. Rich and privileged, every summer they head out to their private island, where she and her three cousins - also known as the Liars - are reunited.
Firstly, I bonded completely with the characters, even though you could argue that they are very spoilt and have the potential to make people irritated by their actions. But for me, though I lead a completely different life to them, I found myself understanding and feeling sorry for them.
It’s quite a short book—only around 200 pages along. And because of this, Lockhart made every single word, sentence, page and chapter count. No word was wasted. She also used interesting page-layout styles, sometimes
writing
sentences
in
this
layout
for dramatic emphasis.
I’ve seen this done in other books before, and sometimes the authors use it so much that it gets annoying. I think Lockhart used it perfectly.
I also need to talk about the ending. Suddenly, everything comes together in one stupefying final few chapters that left me half crying, half shocked into silence. It seemed so obvious after I had read it, and I found myself diving straight back in to try and find the clues.
